Jump Start into Camp Gulliver

CAMP LOCATION: ACADEMY CAMPUS

Whether your child is new to school, new to Gulliver or just looking for big summer fun, this program will help Jump Start primary school students into success in the fall.

Jump Start makes learning fun! The program combines summer fun with pre-reading activities, hands-on math, science experiments, music and a variety of educational games.

Each morning, children work with an experienced, nurturing Gulliver teacher and a dedicated assistant on developing strong learning skills, while afternoons are spent with our fun, experienced counselors for age-appropriate activities including games, arts and crafts and cool fun in the water.

Jump Start into Camp Gulliver - PreK3

It is a small world after all! Come join our PreK3 program, where children learn the earliest school skills, from ABC’s to 123’s, and the different ways that they can show what they know and can do. With Creative Curriculum’s use of hands-on activities, your child will be exposed to learning letter-sound relationships and letter formation with the Handwriting Without Tears program. They will also benefit from Second Step, a research-based program that teaches kids in-demand skills such as empathy, self-regulation, and problem solving and sensory experiences. Don’t miss out on the adventure!

Children must be fully potty trained by the start of the Jump Start program and 3 years old by September 1, 2020.

Gulliver Swim School

Gulliver Swim lessons are provided by iswim Academy. There are 10 levels, divided into 3 sections. In each section, goals are individualized for each student.

Basic swimming: Non-swimmers, early swimmers, young swimmers
Levels 1-4: Wader / Splasher / Jumper / Crawler

A basic introduction to the water comes first. Things like learning to put your head under, keeping your mouth closed, and not allowing water to shoot up your nose, seem like basic thoughts, but for new swimmers, these things need to be learned.

Simply put, learning to swim starts with looking at the floor and kicking to the wall. Survival in the pool starts with jumping or falling in, and learning to get to the wall. Once these two basic things are established, we begin to introduce the arms, further jumps, diving down to the floor to get rings, taking a breath, floating on their back, and a swimmer’s dive.  Jumping, swimming, splashing, diving down, rolling over, “acting like an otter,” etc., is FUN FUN FUN and we believe fun is a huge part of learning to swim safely.

Stroke Swimmers: Usually 5 years old and above (some 3-4-year-olds can learn these skills)
Levels 5-8: Freestyle / Backstroke / Butterfly / Breaststroke

Freestyle, backstroke, butterfly, and breaststroke are the four competitive strokes we teach. It is fairly common for children to be able to handle multiple directions at once. For example, a 3-year-old can be told to look at the floor, kick hard, and grab the wall. As we introduce moving your arms in big circles into that equation, the swimmer deteriorates for a bit as they put it all together.

Stroke perfection is more complicated than survival swimming. For stroke swimmers, we make sure they have a basic understanding of the stroke. We teach the students the small details of each stroke without the expectation that they will be able to do it immediately. Instead, the goal is to teach them how to do it correctly and let them learn, versus trying to change improper stroke down the road.

Survivalist / Competition Swimming
Levels 9-10

In South Florida, boating and competition swimming are popular activities. If a student showcases high levels of understanding and execution, we introduce them to survival strokes that could save your life if your boat capsizes offshore. We also get into competitive swimming, and more advanced learning of strokes, flip turns, training regimens, and more.

Students enrolled in full-day Camp Gulliver or full-day Jumpstart will be able to sign up for swim lessons at an additional charge.
