About 1.5 million juniors in more then 22,000 high schools entered the 2013 National Merit® Scholarship Program by taking the 2011 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which served as an initial screening of program entrants. The highest scoring students in each state are selected for the pool of Semifinalists. The award honors students who show exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies.
The three Gulliver Semifinalists will continue in the running for 8,300 National Merit® Scholarships. About 90 percent of Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and approximately half of the Finalists are likely to win a National Merit® Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar® title. The National Merit Scholarship winners of 2013 will be announced beginning in April, 2013.
