Gulliver Athletics Parent and Student Handbook

Gulliver has a rich tradition of educating students through athletics. With our vast array of athletic programs, student-athletes at every level have the opportunity to develop life skills that they will carry with them far beyond the field, pitch, court or pool. Participation in school-based athletics helps student-athletes develop character and learn to balance the demands of academics and athletics in a supportive environment. They learn leadership skills, teamwork and respect, and that through effort and perseverance they can accomplish great things. Gulliver student-athletes progress through a continuum of athletic programs beginning with early participation in our youth sports program by our youngest students advancing through high level competition for high school varsity athletes. The levels are as follows:

  • 1.Physical Education: Provides a foundation for students to help develop fine and gross motor skills, build strength and conditioning and learn fundamentals of a variety of sports in order to lay the foundation for a lifetime of physical activity, whether in organized sports or personal well-being. Physical education takes place during the school day as a part of students’ academic experience. Physical education staff coordinates with athletics staff to provide complimentary experiences for student-athletes.
  • 2.Youth Sports: Encourages early exposure to athletics and the fundamentals of sports for students in primary and lower school, through grade 5. Youth sports is an after-school activity that generally takes place on school days. Exceptions will be clearly communicated at the beginning of each season.
  • 3.Elite Sports: Allows students looking for a more competitive program to work more on their skills and compete against Club teams from the various sports.
  • 4.Middle School Sports: Focuses on development of skills and enjoyment for all participants in grades 6-8 with little emphasis on game results. Our goal at the middle school level is to welcome, whenever practicable, any student-athlete with a desire to play a sport. Middle school sports generally take place after school and on limited Saturdays during the season. Limited early dismissals from school may be required in order to travel to an away game. In general, middle school sports do not take place over vacations or school breaks. Exceptions to this policy will be communicated to student-athletes and their families at the beginning of the season.
  • 5.High School Sub-Varsity Sports: Develops skills in a more competitive environment for student-athletes in grades 9-12, preparing them for the increased rigors of competitive varsity teams. At this level, ability and preparation impact a student-athlete’s playing time in games. Generally, games take place after school hours and on Saturdays. Limited early dismissals from school may be required in order to travel to an away game or off-site facility such as a golf course. At this level, it is possible that tournaments, games and/or practices will be scheduled over long weekends or extended breaks. Any tournaments, games or practices scheduled over long weekends or extended breaks will be communicated to student-athletes and their families at the beginning of the season.
    • 6.High School Varsity Sports: Develops mastery of the sport for student-athletes in grades 9-12 who are capable of competition at the highest level and are committed to the effort required to maintain high academic and athletic standards. Student-athletes compete for a position on a varsity team. Generally, games take place after school hours and on Saturdays. Limited early dismissals from school will most likely be required in order to travel to an away game or off-site facility such as a golf course. At this level, it is probable that tournaments, games and/or practices will be scheduled over long weekends or extended breaks. Any tournaments, games or practices scheduled over long weekends or extended breaks will be communicated to student-athletes and their families at the beginning of the season.

    Florida High School Athletic Association

    The Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) is the official governing body for interscholastic athletic competition Florida. The aim of the FHSAA is to promote, direct, supervise and regulate interscholastic athletic programs in which high school students, whose schools are members, compete. To accomplish this aim, the Association:

    • Establishes and enforces regulations to ensure that all such athletic programs are part of, and contribute towards, the entire educational program;
    • Cooperates closely with the Florida Department of Education in the development of athletic programs;
    • Promotes the spirit of sportsmanship and fair play in all athletic contests; and
    • Enacts policies and guidelines that safeguard the physical, mental and moral welfare of high school students, and protect them from exploitation.

    As a member of the FHSAA, Gulliver is eligible to compete for all recognized state championship titles* and is bound by the rules and regulations of the FHSAA.     Principles of Good Practice for Member Schools

    Interscholastic athletics can play an important role in the lives of children. The school’s athletic program can be an essential part of the education of students, fostering the development of character, life skills, sportsmanship, and teamwork.

    • 1.The school’s athletic program embodies the mission, philosophy, and objectives of the school.
    • 2.The school ensures that coaches have appropriate training and knowledge of the school’s mission, philosophy, and objectives.
    • 3.The school promotes equity in all aspects of its athletic programs.
    • 4.The school’s athletic program is considered to be an integral part of the school’s curriculum.
    • 5.The school is committed to safety and physical and emotional health of participants in the athletic program.
    • 6.The school’s athletic program values the dignity and worth of the individual in a context of common purpose and collective achievement.
    • 7.Coaching is teaching; coaches are teachers.
    • 8.The school ensures that coaches have an understanding of the developmental needs of the children with whom they work.
    • 9.Coaches design and implement activities that improve the knowledge and skills of all participants.

    The athletic director (AD) and assistant athletic directors (AAD) (one each at the middle school and prep) are responsible for the overall administration of the athletic department. They are responsible for all activities including supervision of the coaching staff, scheduling, facilities, compliance and budgets. The AD and AAD are available to coaches, students and parents to help answer any questions or help resolve any issues.


    Gulliver coaches are among the best in their respective sports. In addition to teaching sport-specific skills, Gulliver coaches are expected to effectively manage their teams to foster a safe and positive environment for our student-athletes. Coaches are expected to do the following:

    • Create a safe, positive environment for student-athletes to achieve success on and off the field
    • Know and follow the rules and policies for their individual sport and team
    • Encourage and support student-athletes’ participation in multiple sports and activities
    • Communicate effectively with student-athletes, parents and administration about such matters as
    • oEligibility
    • oTeam selection process and results
    • oExpectations for student-athletes and parents, and consequences for failure to meet stated expectations
    • oGame and practice schedules
    • oSafety issues, including steps taken to mitigate injuries and what to do in the event of injuries
    • oResources available to Gulliver student-athletes such as access to athletic trainers, academic support, etc.


    Successful Gulliver student-athletes work to achieve their highest potential in the classroom and in the game. In order to be afforded the privilege of being a Gulliver student-athlete, it is understood that all team members will strive to maintain these values and expectations:

    • Achieve their highest academic potential
    • Manage academic and athletic obligations in order to honor all commitments
    • Participate in all community service and spirit building activities
    • Fulfill commitment to Gulliver teams above outside club organizations during the school season
    • Encourage positive team chemistry and help make all team members feel welcome and important.
    • Abide by the rules of the team, school and the game, maintaining high standards of good sportsmanship.
    • Arrive to all games and practice sessions on time ready to give best efforts
    • Notify coach as soon as possible of any circumstance that causes a conflict with a game or practice
    • Accept instructions and listen to feedback from the coach.
    • Make a commitment to attain and maintain top physical fitness throughout the year.
    • Remain drug, alcohol and tobacco free.
    • Demonstrate loyalty and respect for all team members and the school, and work through any ongoing challenges in a constructive and respectful manner.
    • Represent Gulliver in a positive manner through respectful words and actions, particularly when representing Gulliver off-campus.

    Parents Code of Conduct*

    Gulliver recognizes the vital role that parents play in the development of student-athletes. We ask that the parents of each of our student-athletes support the athletic and academic development of all student-athletes by maintaining the following values and expectations:

    • Encourage good sportsmanship by being a positive role model.
    • Support athletics as a positive experience for everyone involved, i.e., participants, coaches, officials, and spectators.
    • Be an enthusiastic and encouraging fan of the entire team.
    • Insist your student-athlete treat other players, coaches, officials, and fans with respect.
    • Reinforce the school's tobacco, drug and alcohol free policies and refrain from using tobacco, alcohol and other drugs before or during contests.
    • Gain an understanding and appreciation for the rules of the team, school and game.
    • Understand that officials are the final authority in a game situation. Questions about calls should come only from the coach.
    • Show appreciation for an outstanding play by either team.
    • Help your child learn that success is measured by the development of skills, not winning or losing.
    • Encourage student-athletes to focus on responding to the coach’s instructions by refraining from “coaching” from the bleachers, especially during a game.
    • Encourage your child to talk directly and respectfully with coaches to resolve questions or concerns.
    • Talk to the coach about any concerns at the appropriate time and place, i.e., never before, during, or immediately after a contest, as coaching responsibilities extend beyond the time frame of the actual contest.
    • Remember that your ticket to a school athletic event provides you with the privilege of observing the contest, not berating officials, coaches, or players. Parents and spectators shall not curse, make derogatory comments about players, coaches or officials, or make threatening gestures or statements at any time.
    • Allow the student-athlete to set his/her own athletic goals and standards.
    • Praise student-athletes in their attempts to improve as students, athletes, and people.
    • Parents and spectators who fail to follow this code of conduct may be asked to leave a contest. Repeated failure to follow the code may result in the parent or spectator being barred from attendance at athletic events or other disciplinary action up to and including the administrative withdrawal of a student-athlete from school.

    Communication Guidelines

    Parents, coaches and administrators are all working toward the same ultimate goal of successful experiences for student-athletes. Clear and effective communication can help to achieve that goal.

    One of the life skills that our student-athletes develop is the ability to resolve issues on their own. We encourage student-athletes to communicate directly and respectfully with their coaches whenever there is an issue or concern. Our coaches will listen to the concerns and work with the student-athlete to clarify or resolve the issue.

    At times an issue is either not resolved between the student-athlete and the coach, or it is of a nature that a parent and coach wish to communicate directly. At such times, we encourage the parent and coach to schedule a call or in-person meeting. It is helpful to state the nature of the concern so that all parties can be properly prepared for the conversation. In general, it is not productive to talk with a coach during or immediately before or after a game or practice as the coach has many responsibilities that extend beyond the standard game or practice time. Parents should expect a return communication from the coach within 24hrs.

    Should the issue or concern not be resolved between the parent and coach, the AD should be brought in. In general, in the event of a disagreement both the parent and the coach will meet with the AD so that all perspectives and information can be shared and the issue brought to a positive resolution as quickly as possible. In the event you are not satisfied with the Athletic Director’s decision, a meeting can be set up with the appropriate Principal.

    Matters to discuss include concerns over physical or mental demands placed on a player and behavioral or disciplinary issues. Coaches are always open to conversations concerning ways for a student-athlete to improve, including access to the variety of resources available to Gulliver students such as athletic trainers, physical training and conditioning and academic support.

    Note that coaches generally do not discuss issues around playing time, game strategy, play calling or other student-athletes with parents. If a student-athlete has a question or concern about his/her own playing time, etc., he/she should speak with the coach directly.

    Note that officials are the authority during any contest. Should the decision of an official come under question, it is the responsibility of the coach to communicate with the official to bring the issue to resolution. Should an issue involving an official require escalation beyond the immediate contest, the coach is to communicate with the AD, who will follow established protocols for the resolution of such disputes. Student-athletes, parents or spectators should not engage in challenges to the decisions of officials.

    Social Media Policy

    The Athletic Department follows the social media policy as outlined in the Gulliver Parent, Student, and Faculty Handbook.

    Eligibility Requirements

    • Student-athletes must meet eligibility requirements established by the FHSAA, a summary of which can be found in Appendix A. Full FHSAA eligibility requirements can be found at
    • A student must be enrolled at Gulliver to participate in any Gulliver athletic program
    • Student-athletes must attend school in order to participate in athletic programs
    • oStudent-athletes must attend the majority of the school day in order to be eligible to participate in any athletic event, game or practice on that day
    • oStudent-athletes who are suspended from school for any reason are ineligible to participate in Gulliver athletic events, games or practices during the term of their suspension.
    • oStudent-athletes who have physical education classes on their school schedule must attend such classes in order to participate in games, practices or other events.

    Gulliver Academic Requirements

    Gulliver maintains academic requirements that exceed those established by the FHSAA as outlined below:

    Grades 6 - 8

    • oStudent-athletes are expected to earn and maintain adequate grades in order to participate in Gulliver athletics. “Adequate grades” for purposes of this section means that a student-athlete has cumulative grades that include fewer than two “D’s” or one “F” at any given time.
    • §In any week in which a student-athlete has failed to earn adequate grades, the student-athlete will be barred from participation in any athletic events, including practice and games.
    • §Barred student-athletes will be required to attend Student Athlete Study Hall (SASH) and tutorial for any classes in which the student-athlete has earned a grade lower than a C-.
    • §Student-athletes may resume participation in Gulliver athletics upon earning adequate grades.

    Grades 9 - 12

    • oStudent athletes must achieve an unweighted GPA of 2.33 or above in academic courses in each nine-week grading period.
    • oStudent-athletes with a grade of incomplete in any academic course will be suspended from competition until all incomplete work has been made up and a GPA can be calculated for eligibility.
    • oA student-athlete who, because of extenuating circumstances, fails to meet the Gulliver requirements but has met the FHSAA requirements may appeal to the Administrative Review Committee (ARC) for further consideration.

    Guidelines for Gulliver Middle School Student-Athletes Participating on Varsity or JV Teams.

    In support of our commitment to enriching the total educational experience for our student-athletes, Gulliver has established the following guidelines for middle school students’ participation in Prep Athletics.

    In general, student-athletes participate in athletic programs established for their grade level. Middle school athletes typically do not participate in varsity or JV athletics.

    Recognizing that some exceptions to this policy will serve the best interest of the student-athletes involved, the following guidelines for exceptions have been established.

    • The middle school student-athlete must maintain acceptable academic standards and consistently demonstrate excellent citizenship, sportsmanship and maturity.
    • The middle school student-athlete must be capable of safe competition at the level of the varsity team to which he/she is being named.
    • Participation by a middle school student-athlete on a JV team completes a team roster, thus enabling other high school student-athletes to participate in the sport (i.e., a team would not have enough members to compete without the middle school student-athlete)
    • The middle school student-athlete competes at a level that exceeds the level of an available middle school team to such a degree that participation on the middle school team is not an enriching experience for the student-athlete being considered or for lesser-skilled student-athletes who are participating at the middle school level. The middle school athlete must be capable of competing at the Varsity level
    • Middle school student-athletes must have parental permission to compete on varsity or JV teams.
    • Middle school student-athletes who wish to participate on a varsity or JV team must receive approval from the Gulliver Athletic Director, Gulliver Academy Assistant Athletic Director and the Middle School Principal for their primary campus (Academy or Montgomery Drive) prior to being allowed to try out for or being added to a varsity or JV roster.
    • These guidelines are to be applied at the discretion of afore mentioned administrators in such a manner as to create the most positive educational experience for the student athletes.

    Required Pre-Participation Forms

    Each student-athlete must complete and submit to the athletic director the following forms prior to any participation in Gulliver athletics, including preseason conditioning, training, practice or playing.

    Note that each student-athlete must undergo a physical evaluation and submit form EL2 – Pre-participation Physical Evaluation, completed and signed by a licensed medical professional prior to participation in Gulliver athletics. Ample time must be allowed for appointments and processing by the medical professional so that the fully completed and signed form can be submitted to the athletic director prior to the first day of conditioning, try-outs or practice. Note that Form EL2 is valid for 365 days from the date signed.

    GA4 - Affidavit of Compliance with the Policies on Athletic Recruiting & Non-Traditional Student Participation

    Required to be submitted by any student who changes attendance to a member school at any time, regardless of whether the change occurs during the school year (i.e. a transfer) or during the summer period between school years, including youth exchange, international and immigrant students, or is a “Non-Traditional” student (i.e. home education, certain charter and special/alternative school, certain private school, FLVS Full Time Public Program, etc.) participating for your school. This form is not required for students entering from a terminating grade school (i.e. 5th grade to 6th, 8th grade to 9th grade).

    Ask office of the athletic director for clarification if you are unsure as to whether this form applies to you.

    Gulliver works hard to create a safe environment for student-athletes. However, injuries are a possibility in any athletic pursuit regardless of the precautions in effect.

    Pinecrest Physical Therapy is the official medical services provider to Gulliver Athletes.

    In the event that a student-athlete becomes injured while participating in any school athletic activity the coach or student-athlete must follow these guidelines:

    • 1.Coach or athletic trainer, if on site, will determine if the injury is of a nature that requires immediate emergency medical care. If that is the case, the coach or designee is to call 9-1-1, or summon emergency medical technicians if on site. Coaches or their designees are not to transport injured student-athletes for treatment.
    • 2.If on site, the athletic trainer will perform an initial evaluation of the injury, provide medical treatment and determination of appropriate next steps.
    • 3.Coach or student-athlete will notify the athletic trainer as soon as possible if he/she is not on site.
    • 4.If any medical referral is recommended by the athletic trainer or coach
    • a.Parents or guardians will be notified
    • b.Athletic trainer and coach will complete an incident report form
    • 5.If a student-athlete sustains an injury that prevents him/her from participating in future practices or games the following steps must be followed:
    • a.Maintain up-to-date communication with the athletic trainer about the status of the injury and rehabilitation efforts, whether rehab is taking place at Gulliver or at another facility.
    • b.Student should be actively following the protocol established by the athletic trainer and/or physician.
    • 6.A student-athlete who has been evaluated by a physician will not be permitted return to full participation after an injury or illness without medical clearance in writing from that physician. The parent of the injured student-athlete may not release his/her child without written medical clearance from the student-athlete’s physician.
    • 7.Gulliver uses ImPACT computerized neurocognitive tests to help evaluate and manage concussions. All athletes undergo baseline concussion testing prior to their season. This concussion management program is a valuable tool in making return-to-play decisions for our injured student-athletes.
    • 8.In the event a concussion is diagnosed, state-mandated return to play concussion protocol must be followed. There are no exceptions to this rule.

    Transportation Policy

    The Athletic Department follows the transportation policy as outlined in the in the Gulliver Parent, Student and Faculty Handbook.
