Welcome to the 2018-19 school year

Dear Gulliver Family,

Welcome back to the start of the new school year! I hope you all enjoyed the time away this summer with your family. While the time to rest and recharge was welcome, we are thrilled to welcome our students and families back to campus today. It is so exciting for our campuses to once again be filled with the sounds of children and to see their smiling faces. New school years bring with them new beginnings and fresh starts, and I am always energized by the beginning of a school year, especially so this year, my first full one at Gulliver.

Last week, we welcomed back our faculty and staff to begin preparations for the new school year, and I shared with them my "Observations of Gulliver's Greatness" – student accomplishments and accolades that I observed last school year. I was only able to share a selected list of achievements, and it is an impressive list to be sure. However, I believe what is most impressive is the sheer magnitude of the variety of ways in which our students excel. This is indeed what makes Gulliver unique – the "Gulliver Difference" – and flows out of our mission to create an academic community devoted to educational excellence, with a personal touch, that fulfills each student's potential. Every child brings to us, and the world, a unique potential that is all his or her own. Our strength as a school is helping every student identify, cultivate, and ultimately fulfill their unique potential first by knowing and caring for each child and through offering an unparalleled breadth of academic, co-curricular, and extra-curricular opportunities.

Even in view of our "greatness" as a school, we are never content to rest on our laurels. We have many new and exciting programs and opportunities for students this year including new electives, expanded field studies opportunities, and upgraded spaces for learning and collaboration. We have identified several key areas for institutional growth this year in furtherance of our 2016 strategic plan. These initiatives include work around diversity, equity, and inclusion; alcohol and drug education with an emphasis on student well-being; and increasing connections for student learning with the real-world through growing the Community Outreach Raider Experience ("CORE") program. For more details on this work, see our Head of School's Corner here.

We will be taking the next steps to realize our campus master plans this year. We shared the conceptual site plans at the end of last school year which can be found here. Based on the feedback from our community and through gathering additional faculty, staff, and student input, we will develop the conceptual plans into more defined master plans. We are already working with the Village of Pinecrest and the City of Coral Gables to receive the necessary approvals for the plans. These approvals will not only allow us to begin planning for construction but will also allow us to successfully complete the land swap transaction with Crossbridge Church.

This year truly promises to be an exciting one for our school! I look forward to seeing you on one of our campuses. Thank you for the privilege of serving your children and family.

With Gulliver Pride,
