When Middle School Visual Arts Department faculty member Katherine Brewer learned that environmental artist Patrick Dougherty's works would be on display at Pinecrest Gardens, she knew her students would enjoy seeing them. "Dougherty travels all over the world building these artistic eco-structures and they remain there until [they] slowly decompose," she explained.
Not only were the Middle School students in awe of the massive outdoor work of art, but they were also excited to learn that there was a county-wide photography competition involved. The competition sought the student who could photograph the pieces, titled "Stickworks," using the best photographic techniques. "Nolan Wu '24 won first place, and he was competing against older students throughout Miami-Dade County," Ms. Brewer proudly said. "He not only won a nice prize for himself, but also a $1,000 prize for Gulliver."
Gulliver will use the funds towards an environmentally-friendly project for the Academy-Marian C. Krutulis Campus during the coming school year.
