On April 14, Head of School Frank Steel and his wife, Betsy, opened their home to host Gulliver's first-ever Legacy Family Brunch. It was a chance for alumni, and their children who now attend Gulliver (including incoming legacy families), to get to know each other and reflect on why it's important to them that their children follow in their academic footsteps and carry on the Raider tradition.
Guests enjoyed a delicious brunch, kids' games and activities. Steel and Laura Keepax '85, P '18 '18 talked passionately about the ways that, while years pass and schools evolve, traditions and Gulliver's sense of community and family remain the same.
Guests fondly shared their favorite Gulliver memories. "My best memories are of the people I went to high school with," said Libby Witherspoon '87, P '25, whose daughter, Julia Witherspoon '25, is a fifth grader at the Academy. "Making friends and the camaraderie we had, and still have, to this day." Jason Kellogg '93 also reflected fondly on his school years. "I have so many good memories of my time at Gulliver, inside the classroom and outside, and I think that's really what made it special for me," he said. Laetitia Piedra '93 recalled, "My favorite Gulliver memory is the sense of pride that we all had for our school, attending football games, the pep rallies and, of course, studying as well."
Our students were also happy to share their thoughts on being passed the Gulliver torch from their parents. "It's important that I'm going to the same school as my mom, because it keeps the tradition going," said Yannick Rahman '23, son of Zahra Rahman '90. "[At Gulliver] the teachers are really nice, everything is well-organized and I have a lot of friends here."
It was truly a family affair, catching up with Raiders, old and new. Click here to view photos from the event.
"We're proud to offer meaningful programming for our legacy families, and especially grateful to Jill Reiter '89, P '20 '23 '25 for offering to host next year's Legacy Family event, said Lori-Ann Cox P '19 '25, Gulliver's Executive Director, External Affairs and Chief Advancement Officer. "We celebrate passing down the Gulliver tradition to the next generation."
