Alumni Advisory Council
The Gulliver Schools Alumni Council was established to provide the leadership for fostering a close connection between Gulliver and its alumni. Its primary focus is to partner with the Gulliver Alumni Relations office in its central mission of promoting and facilitating a lifelong relationship between Gulliver and its former students to encourage and promote strong and loyal alumni of Gulliver Schools.
The council carries out its purpose by meeting quarterly to advise and discuss effective approaches to:
- developing a stronger means of access to alumni.
- assisting with alumni class reunions and pursuing other alumni events.
- strengthening attendance at alumni sponsored events.
- achieving commitment to the vitality of the Gulliver Alumni Association.
- increasing involvement with Gulliver Prep students and college age alumni. through internships and career mentoring opportunities.
Dr. Amy Boyers attended the University of Pennsylvania where her love of psychology began. There she worked as a research assistant for the renowned professor and researcher, Martin E.P. Seligman, Ph.D., for most her college years.
Dr. Boyers worked at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City as a research assistant after college, where she was then awarded a prestigious U.S. Department of Defense psychological research fellowship at the University of Miami. This allowed her to complete her master and doctoral degree in clinical health psychology. She completed her pre-doctoral internship at the University of Miami Counseling Center where she began to hone her specific skill in eating disorders.
Dr. Boyers also completed two post-doctoral residencies at the University of Miami Department of Psychology as Project Director of an NCI-funded breast cancer study and at the Renfrew Center as a primary therapist in their intensive outpatient program for eating disorders.
Dr. Boyers has been in private practice in South Miami since 2001 where she provides therapy to adolescents and adults, with a focus on women’s health, eating disorders, anxiety and mood disorders, and behavioral medicine. She is the Director of Training and a consulting therapist at the South Miami Oliver-Pyatt Center, an eating disorders treatment facility. She has co-authored numerous articles in professional psychology journals and is a frequent speaker on topics such as stress, trauma, and eating disorders.

Gerald Jorge holds both a B.S. and an M.B.A from the University of Miami. He is the Managing Director for The G Organization, a private equity firm engaged primarily in capital markets and real estate. There he established two market neutral, volatility arbitrage funds, both significantly outperforming the relevant bench marks and competing funds.
Jorge carried on his knowledge to engage his time and efforts in the investments industry for 12 years. Also, having worked in the gaming equipment manufacturing industry allowed him to reorganize a company which he returned to profitability and extended their global footprint on three continents. Lastly, Jorge created a commercial real estate private equity fund, scheduled to launch in 2011.
As a member of the Gulliver Alumni Advisory Council, he enjoys meeting with other distinguished alumni and generating ways to enhance Gulliver brand awareness amongst other alumni.

Upon graduating from Gulliver Prep in 2001, Javier Perez-Giz moved north to attend Tufts University in Medford, Mass. After earning his bachelor's degree in economics from Tufts in 2005, Perez-Giz spent time as a credit analyst and then as a successful pharmaceutical representative in South Florida. Today, working as a financial representative with Northwestern Mutual, Perez-Giz uses his personal and professional experiences to help his clients in the business, legal, and medical fields develop financial security and accomplish what they've set out to achieve in life.
Perez-Giz remains in contact with many his classmates, both in his graduating class and beyond. He regularly attends Gulliver Alumni Association events, and is a proud inaugural member of the Alumni Advisory Council. He looks forward to making Gulliver’s Alumni a close knit and stronger community within South Florida. Perez-Giz also enjoys giving back to the community by participating in and contributing to many charitable organizations, most notably the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Autism Speaks, and Relay for Life.
Sally Hanna is a licensed attorney in the state of Florida with her undergraduate degree in business finance. Both her B.B.A. and J.D. are from the University of Miami. For five years, her law practice consisted of general civil trial litigation.
Sally is the proud mother of two daughters, Victoria and Tiffany. Victoria graduated from Gulliver Preparatory in 2011 and is currently a sophomore studying accounting at the University of Florida. Tiffany is carrying on the tradition as a freshman at Gulliver Prep.
As a member of the Gulliver Alumni Advisory Council, Sally is looking forward to facilitate the connections between our experienced and recent alums.
Corey Mershon has been working in the employee benefits marketplace for more than 16 years, having graduated from the University of Florida. He started his career with United HealthCare as a sales rep in South Florida, later moving to Blue Cross Blue Shield in the Fort Lauderdale sales offices. In 2006 he embarked on his own, becoming an independent agent specializing in group insurance. Corey partnered with his father, Mark Mershon, an independent financial planner. Most recently he joined Cigna as a senior account executive, marketing health, dental, and life and disability insurance in the 250-5000 employer group segment in the South Florida and Tampa markets.
Corey has been actively involved on the board of his local insurance association, the Broward Association of Health Underwriters, since 1996, and served a two-year term as president.
Mershon is also an avid philanthropist, having assisted Kids in Distress in their fundraising efforts for the last 13 years. Through his professional association and on his own, he has committed countless hours of volunteer and committee work for this great organization. He has also spent time assisting the United Way and Habitat for Humanity.
Through his efforts in the insurance industry and his community, Corey feels it is his way of giving back to a career that has enriched his life immeasurably. He is single, and currently resides in Fort Lauderdale. He is an avid sports fan, and enjoys both attending and participating in many sports. He is also fond of socializing and networking to further expand his business and personal relationships.
Hugh Schmidt, a Gulliver lifer, attended The Johns Hopkins University and received bachelor degrees in both Psychology and Art History. He was very active in student activities while at Hopkins becoming a key organizer of the University’s Annual Spring Fair, a major community wide event. While still enrolled at Hopkins he also began work as a research assistant in Behavioral Research at The Johns Hopkins Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science. It was here that Hugh discovered an affinity and skill in information technology. This then led to a position as a technical liaison officer with the Department of Agriculture. Here he helped implement a Department wide training center and found he also enjoyed the opportunity to train end-users.
After 8 years in the Northeast, Hugh returned to Miami. Having worked in various information technology positions at Ryder, FPL, and Miami Children’s Hospital, he is now with the University of Miami working in Decision Support Services as a Business Analyst.
Hugh and his partner Ed Hill ‘83 are both frequent patrons of the arts with the New World Symphony and the UM Ring Theater as two of their favorite venues. They both enjoy keeping in touch with the Gulliver community and maintain many of the friendships born out of the Gulliver experience.
Jorge Valle-Riestra earned his undergraduate degree in International Finance and Marketing from the University of Miami and his Masters in Business Administration from Thunderbird, the American Graduate School of International Management. He is President of King Products and Equipment, a machinery company that offers its own brand of heavy construction equipment as well as original attachments, components, and parts to the construction, agricultural, material handling, and mining industries, as well as cutting edge products and accessories to the topographic surveying industry.
Jorge also has a property in Miami Horse Country that has the commercial zoning approved for the construction of an upscale equestrian center. He plans to develop this property in the near future to offer lessons to riders of all levels as well as providing individually appropriate equine-assisted therapy to children and adults with disabilities and special needs.
Jorge continues to be active in supporting Gulliver events and fund raisers and he regularly reaches out to alumni to be more involved with their alma mater.
Dr. Carolina Pedroletti McCain graduated with honors from the University of Florida with a bachelor of science degree in nutritional sciences. Focusing her passion for health care, she went on to attend optometry school at Nova Southeastern University. In 2005, she received her Doctorate of Optometry degree.
Dr. Pedroletti currently works at the Center For Excellence in Eye Care, the largest ophthalmology practice at Baptist Hospital and one of the largest ophthalmic practices in Miami, FL. She has been helping patients with their vision at the Center since 2005. She performs comprehensive eye examinations, identifies refractive surgery candidates, provides post-operative care for both cataract and refractive surgery and fits simple and specialty contact lenses. Dr. Pedroletti is trained in fitting patients with lenses for various eye conditions and is very proud to be a part of such a distinguished ophthalmic practice including world-renowned corneal surgeon and Gulliver alumnus, Dr. Bill Trattler, class of 1984.
Carolina has recently married her Gulliver classmate, Ben Mccain (class of '96) and they live in Coconut Grove with their dog, Fanucci.
As a new member of the Gulliver Advisory Council, Dr. Pedroletti looks forward to meeting and connecting Gulliver Alumni.
